Step-by-Step Gate Installation Process:
-
Gate Openings:
- Gates are made to fit specified openings with allowance for gate hardware.
- Opening – Hinge Allowance – Latch Allowance = Gate O.D.
- Example: 48” (Opening) – 1” (Hinge) – 1” (Latch) = 46” (Gate O.D.)
-
Preparing the Gate:
- Review the stickers indicating installation instructions on each gate package. “Hinge This Side Only” and “This Side Up.”
- Note the orientation stickers, “Inside Left or Inside Right,” to determine from which side the gate will hang. This ensures the gate brace is positioned inside the yard and aligned correctly.
- Unpackage carefully.
-
Gate Hardware:
- Confirm proper bracket placement for the gates to swing in or out.
- Disassemble the top hinge set. Keep the bottom set together.
- The pivoting bracket should be connected to the hinge post.
- Align hinges with the center or top of the highest & lowest rails, maximizing the distance between the brackets and positioning to the strongest area of the gate frame post.
- Secure the top thread bolt bracket to the hinge post and female bracket to the gate.
- Secure the bottom thread bolt bracket to the hinge post. (do not attach the female bracket to the gate)
-
Installing the Gate:
- Slide the threaded bolt on the pivot bracket into the female bracket at the top of the gate.
- Tighten nuts to hold the gate in place while making sure the bottom of the gate stays seated in the female bracket.
- Attach the bottom hinge bracket to the gate where the gate is seated in the bracket.
- Adjust the gate to ensure it is properly aligned within the opening before proceeding to install the latch.
-
Securing the Gate:
- Install the latch at the proper height.
- Add any additional hardware such as cane bolts and gate handles. A gate handle with a stopper is recommended to alleviate stress on the gate frame latch post.
The Importance of Proper Installation
Proper installation of gates is crucial for the longevity and functionality of your fencing projects. These steps will help ensure the gates installed will provide long-lasting durability, security and aesthetic appeal.
